CASA LAGO · PARKING AND TOWING

Parking rules should be clear. A tow should be explainable.

USEFUL FACTS

Did you know?

Three details worth checking. Which rule applies depends on the legal ground for the tow.

Entrance signs matter

For a tow based on posted signs, California requires signs at every entrance with specified size, wording, and phone numbers. Other legal grounds for removal also exist.

Read §22658(a) ↗

Someone must authorize it

Ordinarily, the owner or an agent must verify the violation and authorize the tow in writing. Written standing authority for the towing company is limited to certain hydrant, fire-lane, or entrance and exit obstructions.

The tow record matters

When a vehicle towed under individual authorization is claimed, the company must provide a copy of the written authorization before payment; for a residential tow, the copy must redact the authorizer’s identifying details. Under qualifying standing authority for a hydrant, fire lane, or access obstruction, it must show and provide a free copy of the violation photo when the vehicle is claimed.

REVIEW A RECENT OR PAST TOW

Have You Ever Been Towed at Casa Lago?

Whether it happened yesterday or a year ago, you can reconstruct what happened, ask for the grounds, and compare records with the rule used. Some document-delivery rights arise when the vehicle is claimed; asking for a copy later is different.

Vehicle still missing or tow truck still there?

If you cannot locate the vehicle, ask management, the company on the signs, and Chula Vista non-emergency dispatch whether it received a tow notice. Police notice is not approval. If the truck has not left the property, the vehicle owner or agent can request immediate release; if the vehicle is already coupled, a charge of up to half the regular tow fee may apply. 1. Reconstruct the date, place, and costs.

Write down when and where the vehicle was parked, who towed it, where it was stored, when it was retrieved, and what you paid. Keep receipts, the itemized invoice, notices, photos, and messages. If it is still in storage, ask for an itemized invoice before payment, your personal property at no charge during normal business hours, and release without a lien fee during the first 72 hours of storage.

    Vehicle Code §22651.07(b), (c) ↗
  2. Ask for the specific legal ground.

Ask management and the tow company: What specific violation was alleged, and which ground in §22658(a) or other authority allowed removal? What parking rule and entrance signs were in effect that day? The registered or legal owner can request the grounds for removal under §22658(f). Entrance signs are one possible ground, not the only one.

    Vehicle Code §22658(a), (f) ↗
  3. Ask for the applicable authorization or photo.

Ask whether a person authorized this particular tow in writing or the company used standing authority for a hydrant, fire lane, or access obstruction. In the first case, request the authorization copy; in the second, request the violation photo and standing-authority agreement. Section 22658(l) requires the applicable copy or photo when the vehicle is claimed, before payment. The company must retain the original record for three years for inspection by the authorities named in the law. That rule does not expressly guarantee a resident another copy long afterward; request it and keep the response.

    Vehicle Code §22658(l)(1)–(3) ↗
  4. Compare the explanation with the charges and decide what to ask next.

Compare the signs, rule in effect, stated ground, authorization or photo, and invoice. Ask management and the tow company in writing to explain any discrepancy. Section 22658 limits certain charges; §22651.07 requires an itemized invoice before payment. If you suspect a wrongful tow, you can ask local law enforcement or the prosecutor how to report it and consult a legal professional about possible remedies and deadlines. A later records request does not extend any legal deadline.

Vehicle Code §22658(i), (j), (l) ↗ · Ask housing legal aid about help or referral ↗

You can still ask questions a year later, but available records, the law in effect when the tow occurred, and any legal deadlines depend on the case. This guide does not decide whether a particular tow was lawful or promise reimbursement.

QUESTIONS ABOUT THE TOW

What should the property be able to explain?

A tow is not automatically improper. These questions help test parking rules and decisions before looking for a pattern.

Rules and notice

What written rule applied to residents and guests? Where was it provided, and what did entrance signs say? Ask for the version in effect when the tow happened.

Grounds and authorization

What specific ground was used to remove the vehicle, and who authorized or documented the decision? California law has different grounds and requirements; ask for the record tied to the ground used.

Costs and outcome

Keep photos of signs, parking instructions, receipts, and pickup date and location. Ask management in writing what it reviewed and decided; keep its response or lack of one.

These questions identify records to review. They do not decide whether a particular tow violated the law. Vehicle Code §22658 ↗

HOW TO READ THE REPORTS

What a group of answers might show

If multiple people report tows, that may justify requesting and comparing rules, signs, authorizations, and costs. It does not establish that the tows were improper. People who visit this site choose to participate, so the count does not measure the property-wide tow rate.

Basic private-property tow rules

  • The law sets conditions for entrance signs and other grounds for removing a vehicle.
  • Written authorization is generally required; general-authorization exceptions are limited.
  • The registered or legal owner can ask for the grounds. At pickup, a copy of the authorization or violation photo may be required, depending on the basis used.
  • The law also requires notice to local law enforcement; notice does not mean police approved the tow.
Read Vehicle Code §22658 ↗

These rules do not decide whether a particular tow was lawful. Keep receipts, parking instructions, and photos if you want to review your case.
